What is business casual? And what can i get away with?

I just got a job that requires me to dress business casual. from my understanding that would just be some dress pants or slacks and a button up shirt and dress shoes.. i understand that there should be no t shirts- shorts-jeans- tennis or skate shoes. however, would i be able to get away with like dickies button up shirts or plaid short sleeve button up shirts? do they have to be dress shirts? longsleeve? undershirt? please help cuz im kind of ignorant on the subject. thanks in advance.
