Why do Chinese wash their underwear every day by hand?

I had a conversation with a Chinese woman who was stunned that I washed my boxer shorts with undershirts only once a week. She seemed to think it was very important the underwear be washed separately from other clothing and done by hand. I could not get a good answer from her as to why it was so important.
